Turkish Get Up 24kg (53 pounds)

Here is a video clip of me performing a Turkish Get Up with my little girl in the background.  My training focus has been slow strength in just a few exercises.  As I was increasing my pressing power past the 16kg (35lb), using the 44lb, I noticed my shoulders developing more than I liked.  I also began Krav Maga almost 5 months ago, which requires quite a bit of shoulder work with all the punching, which is more volume on my shoulders!  If I wasn't using them so frequently I could probably continue a strength pressing program with no problems.  I'm not trying to be superficial but I still like to look girlie from time to time.  I know most of you ladies are with me on this. Strong is cool, but looking like a girl is pretty cool as well.  ;-)  Therefore I've decided to back off on my super pressing goals and will be content with being able to double press 16kg's, which totals to over 70 pounds.  Over the last several months my weight fluctuates between 108 and 114.  So relatively speaking it's enough in my book.  ;-)

Heavy Get Ups don't seem to have a major effect on hypertrophy for my body.  I also have noticed my trunk has become so much more stable as a result from being able to stabilize this amount of weight.  My body has been through so much in the past several years.  I'm so thankful that I'm able to have such a pain free, mobile, and strong body after all it's been through.  As many of you know I've given birth to rather large babies for my size (or any size) and had to undergo two c-sections, which should not be taken lightly.  In addition my stomach grew so unbelievably big last pregnancy that my abdominals actually separated a bit, it's called Diastasis Recti.  If you are not careful when getting back in to training you can give yourself a hernia.  This is quite common in pregnancies.  To be able to rehabilitate myself with just the use of kettlebells, body weight training, and suspended cables, it's been a very rewarding journey.   Hope you enjoy!

That is very impressive LGB. I cannot even do that weight for a TGU.

But, did you even breathe during those 2 minutes? I didn't see your mouth open once. ;-)

TJK, You are funny. I'm sure you could do a TGU with 24kg if you practice for a few weeks. My mouth didn't open because I was very relaxed and breathing through my nose. ;-)

Lauren - did you do TGUs with the diastasis recti? Just not sure if it's too much strain on my weakened core... I have a small (pinhead size) umbilical hernia and about 2 fingers diastasis recti from my second pregnancy as well. It's been 4 months since the c-section and there has been little to no closing of the gap. How long did it take for you?

Lauren how long did it take you to correct your diastasis recti? Did you perform TGUs with the DR? I'm just not sure if my weakened core can handle the twisting. I, too, have about 2 fingers DR from my second baby (both were also sections). I'm afraid my abdomen might never recover! It's been 4 months with the gap still the same...

What Doctor's don't tell you after a C-section

I have now been through 2 C-sections since writing this blog post and thankfully I've recovered beautifully from both with the appropriate progressions. For those who are new and are just finding me. WELCOME! First let me say I did NOT want a C-section. I did everything in my power to avoid the first and even the second. I'm a kettlebell fitness strength and conditioning coach who relies on her body to share, teach, educate, and I was under the impression that having to give birth via C-section would and could destroy my body and career. Boy was I wrong! If you're feeing the same way, start by reading this article I wrote many years ago that still applies today! Many people have asked and here is part of my experience.  I don't claim to be a medical expert but not only have I successfully healed my C-section, my abdominals are no longer numb, and I've successfully helped others who've had multiple C-sections (even some 20 years ago) find their core aga
